Electronic Voice Phenomenon (EVP):

Photographs:

Orbs: The most common type of anomaly in photos is the orb. Most orbs are a result of the camera’s own flash reflecting off dust particles, insects, humidity, and precipitation immediately in front of the lens causing a pixilation effect. This has become increasingly common with the use of digital cameras. Other causes are refraction/lens flare, which results from light hitting the lens at unusual angles resulting in various colored glowing spheres or shapes.

Mists: Another common photo anomaly is mist, often referred to as a portal or ectoplasm. Most are the result of exhaled breath or cigarette smoke. Fog, steam, humidity, temperature changes, fingers inadvertently in the viewer, or even camera movement can also cause a mist like anomaly. Often these are not obvious to the person when taking the photo, but once illuminated by the flash of a camera it shows up vividly in photographs.

Flares or Streaks of Light: Another type of anomaly often thought to be paranormal is a more solid light stream. Often this is caused by one of two ways. First, it can be caused by something which is very close to the camera which is not in focus and catches a lot of the flash (very often caused by a strand of hair or a camera strap). A second cause is when the camera is compensating for a dark area by using a slower shutter speed and the photographer unconsciously moves the camera ever so slightly, or the subject in the photo moves, causing a blur and streaks any light present in the viewer.
PLEASE NOTE: GPRI routinely captures orbs, mists, flares, and streaks of light in their photos and videos, but have found that most of these can be easily explained scientifically by natural causes. Yes, we do think some anomolies can be created with energy which may, or may not be, paranormal. If GPRI ever presents one of these types of photos or videos as “evidence” it will only be because of a very unique characteristic which makes us believe it could be more than what can be duplicated or scientifically explained. Because catching "true" paranormal photographs is actually very rare, you will rarely see them posted here, and only after we have used every avenue available to us to look for a logical explanation.
“When you have eliminated all which is impossible, then whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.” ~Sherlock Holmes
2 Voices: "Yeah" "Broke"
EVPs are sounds caught on audio recorders that are usually not heard by the human ear during the time they were recorded, but are later discovered when reviewing the audio from the investigation. Often these sounds are strange and unidentifiable, but sometimes they are clearly heard voices or distinguishable noises. Often they are in response to what is going on in the room or answers to direct questions by investigators.

There are 4 classes of EVPs which GPRI recognizes for classification in paranormal investigations:
Class A: loud and clear high quality EVP that is easily understood by all
Class B: can be heard but hard to distinctly understand - not as loud or clear as Class A
Class C: can faintly hear a voice or sound, but is very hard to understand
Class D/R: very poor quality and questionable if actually an EVP is present

Matrixing in photos:

Matrixing/Apophenia/Pareidolia: The human brain has a tendency to look at complex visual stimuli and detect patterns in search of familiar shapes. As we get older our brains have more visual images to call upon for this pattern recognition to apply to what we see in an attempt to make sense out of something that may originally appear random. This often occurs when we look at objects such as leaves, bark, jagged rocks, water, clouds, reflections, smoke, just about anything with texture and/or shadows. The most common occurrence seen tends to be faces, as humans are wired to seek out faces from birth as a survival mechanism. However, just about anything can be seen via matrixing such as body shapes, animals and objects. (The photo to the right is a famous example of a face seen via matrixing of jagged rocks and shadows)
